My Israel Experience…

Seven months ago, I had the opportunity to visit Israel, a trip that left me feeling exceptionally safe and welcomed, reinforcing the notion that it’s a sanctuary for me, especially against any turmoil back in the United States. However, the war between Israel and Hamas, especially after the October 7 massacre where 1,300 Jews were killed, profoundly impacted me. This conflict not only highlighted the brutality of Hamas but also ushered a wave of antisemitism that reached across continents, affecting my life directly at school.

Discussions

My school, a small all-girls institution, had always felt like a safe space until the aftermath of the massacre when the hateful rhetoric began to infiltrate the student body. Discussions about the conflict forced me into a defensive position, where I was isolated for being Jewish and accused of supporting oppression. The situation escalated when a speaker, associated with an anti-Semitic organization funding Hamas, was invited to discuss the “Palestinian Genocide,” spreading further misinformation and hate.

This event, among others, significantly shifted the atmosphere at my school. I faced direct confrontations, was circled by peers demanding my opinion in a hostile manner, and even witnessed teachers showing support for the very rhetoric that vilified my identity. Such instances of antisemitism, from social media to personal interactions, have been disheartening and alarming.

Despite these challenges, these experiences have not silenced me but rather emboldened my Jewish identity and my resolve to stand against hate. They’ve encouraged me to forge stronger connections with the Jewish community within my school and identify allies who stand with me against antisemitism. The hope remains that by facing this hatred head-on and maintaining our identity with pride, the Jewish community can reinforce its bond with Israel, making the notion of returning to a welcoming and safe homeland even more profound.
